Signal Mountain was used by Native Americans in the past to send smoke and fire signals across the Tennessee Valley. It was originally known as Signal Point and was a communications station at the time of the American Civil War. It was chartered as the Town of Signal Mountain in 1919. The town experienced growth mostly in the 1970s.

Signal Mountain is one of the most highly sought after suburbs in the Chattanooga area. It is a sparse, but affluent community, with it’s secluded and private small-town feel. It is surrounded by natural beauty on all sides, and is considered the safest community in the area.
Weekly Bluegrass music shows are held every Friday evening at the Mountain Opry. The Booker T. Washington State Park and the Green Gorge Park offer recreation facilities. Fun fact: Signal Mountain is not the actual name of the mountain- but of the town itself. The mountain range is called Walden Ridge.
